Special Edition: 👻 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the Ghosts He Could Not Explain

Special Edition: 👻 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the Ghosts He Could Not Explain There is something wonderfully eerie about the man who created Sherlock Holmes going ghost hunting. Not metaphorically. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle entered reportedly haunted houses after dark. He waited inside an old church for its dead to appear. He investigated strange footsteps, spectral figures and sinister rooms. He claimed that something unseen once crossed his bedroom and whispered beside him. For this Halloween Special Edition, I’m leaving Sherlock Holmes at the door. Tonight, we’re following Arthur Conan Doyle into the dark. 🏚️ The Haunted House at Charmouth Long before Conan Doyle became one of the world’s most famous defenders of Spiritualism, he had already begun investigating hauntings. After joining the Society for Psychical Research in the 1890s, he was asked to join a small party examining a reportedly haunted house at Charmouth, on the Dorset coast. [1] The f...

🕯️ Lord Byron & the Black Friar of Newstead Abbey

🕯️ Lord Byron & the Black Friar of Newstead Abbey Some ghost stories attach themselves to famous people long after they are dead. This is not quite one of those stories. Long before Lord Byron became one of the great figures of the Romantic movement, a shadow already belonged to his ancestral home. It was said to move through the ancient rooms and cloisters of Newstead Abbey dressed in the dark habit of a monk. According to family and local tradition, its appearance was not random. The Black Friar came when something was about to happen to the Byrons. A marriage. A birth. A death. Misfortune. And in 1814, Lord Byron himself was said to have seen him. 🏰 A Monastery Becomes a Family Home Newstead Abbey rises from the Nottinghamshire landscape with exactly the sort of history that seems designed for a ghost story. Yet even its familiar name conceals something. Newstead was never technically an abbey. It began as an Augustinian priory, founded dur...

🐦‍⬛ The Ghost of Edgar Allan Poe: A Stranger on Sullivan’s Island

🐦‍⬛ The Ghost of Edgar Allan Poe: A Stranger on Sullivan’s Island There is something about Sullivan’s Island that has always drawn me. I have visited the island and spent time at Poe’s Tavern, the wonderfully eccentric little restaurant dedicated to Edgar Allan Poe. It is one of those places where the writer’s presence seems woven into the surroundings, from the artwork to the names on the menu. Yet until recently, I had no idea that a reported encounter with Poe’s ghost might lead straight back to a restaurant I already knew. After attending the Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy at Marietta’s haunted Strand Theatre in September, I found myself following another thread of his story. This time, it led away from the stage and toward the South Carolina coast, where a young soldier once walked the beaches of Sullivan’s Island under a name that was not his own. And where, nearly two centuries later, someone reportedly encountered a stranger who seemed to know an extraordinary am...

🔮 Clairvoyance & the Psychic Mind: Seeing Beyond the Senses — Part One

Image
🔮 Clairvoyance & the Psychic Mind: Seeing Beyond the Senses — Part One What if you could see somewhere you had never been? Not imagine it. Not dream about it because someone had described it to you. But somehow perceive a place hundreds or thousands of miles away, including details you seemingly had no ordinary way of knowing. After telepathy, this was one of the next uncomfortable questions waiting for nineteenth-century psychical researchers. Telepathy at least offered them another human mind. One person knew something. Somehow, perhaps, another person received it. But clairvoyance threatened to remove even that explanation. In 1891, psychical researcher Eleanor Sidgwick published a substantial investigation into the evidence for clairvoyance in the Proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research . She was attempting to examine reports in which information appeared to have been acquired without the ordinary senses, while carefully considering whether ...

Special Edition: 🕯️The Haunted Strand: Ghosts Behind the Marquee

🕯️ The Haunted Strand: Ghosts Behind the Marquee The Oracle of the Green Sight | Halloween Special Edition 2026 🎭 An Evening with Poe, and a Theater with Secrets On Friday, September 25, I visited the historic Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre in Marietta, Georgia, for the six o'clock performance of the Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy. An evening devoted to one of literature's most celebrated masters of the macabre seemed a fitting way to welcome another Halloween season. But as I began exploring the history of the theater itself, I discovered something rather wonderful. The Strand has its own collection of ghost stories, including a woman said to sing along with movies, a playful child who apparently enjoys interfering with the backstage crew, and a mysterious presence known simply as Ghost. And then there is the building's extraordinary connection to Halloween itself. Before the Strand welcomed its first audience, the site h...
